A Personal Optimal Thinking Framework

Updated: Mar 17

A Guide to Peak Decision-Making

If you have been following our blog, you would have seen how thinking can be sabotaged by biases, blind spots, and emotional hijacking.

But what’s the solution? How do you consistently think at your best—avoiding mental traps and making decisions that set you up for success?

You need a Personal Optimal Thinking Framework—a structured approach to thinking that keeps your mind sharp, your decisions sound, and your growth unstoppable. Let’s break it down.

Step 1: Define Your Thinking Goals

Most people drift through decisions without a clear thinking objective. Instead of hoping for the best, ask yourself:

🔹 What does “optimal thinking” mean for me? (Clarity, objectivity, strategic foresight?)

🔹 What kind of decisions do I want to improve? (Career, business, leadership, personal growth?)

🔹 What mental habits do I need to eliminate? (Overthinking, impulsiveness, indecisiveness?)

💡 Pro tip: Write down your top three thinking improvement goals to anchor your framework.

Step 2: Recognize & Override Cognitive Biases

Your brain LOVES shortcuts—but they often lead to bad decisions. The key is noticing biases in real time before they steer you off course.

Pause & Analyze – Before making an important decision, ask:“Am I seeing the full picture, or am I filtering reality to fit what I already believe?”

Use an Outside Perspective – If someone else were making this decision, what blind spots might they have? Apply that lens to yourself.

Fact-Check Your Feelings – Strong emotions signal a need for System 2 thinking (deliberate, logical thought). Ask:“Am I reacting or reasoning?”

💡 Pro tip: Keep a Decision Journal—track big choices and review them later to spot recurring thinking errors.

Step 3: Use the “OPTIMAL” Thinking Model

To make optimal decisions, use this simple yet powerful framework:

🔹 Observe – Step back and take in the full situation. What’s really happening?

🔹 Pause – Resist knee-jerk reactions. Give your brain space to think.

🔹 Test Assumptions – Challenge what you “think” you know. Seek counterarguments.

🔹 Identify Core Factors – What are the most important elements influencing this decision?🔹 Map Outcomes – Play out different scenarios—what’s the best, worst, and most likely result?

🔹 Act with Awareness – Move forward consciously, knowing you’ve optimized your thought process.

🔹 Learn & Adjust – After each major decision, reflect: What worked? What didn’t? What can I refine?

Step 4: Upgrade Your Awareness & Perception

Your ability to think optimally depends on what you notice. The more aware you are of hidden factors, the sharper your thinking becomes.

🔹 Expand Your Awareness – Train yourself to see beyond the obvious. Ask: What am I missing?

🔹 Improve Your Attention Control – Avoid distractions and focus deeply when analyzing important decisions.

🔹 Question What You “Know” – Challenge assumptions, even long-held beliefs.

(At BVOLVR Academy, we specialize in training leaders to see what others miss—mastering perception to eliminate blind spots and make superior decisions.)

Step 5: Create Your Daily Optimal Thinking Habit

High-level thinking isn’t something you do once in a while—it’s a daily discipline. Build habits that keep your mind sharp:

Morning Mindset Check – Set your intention: What do I need to think about critically today?

Midday Awareness Reset – Pause & reflect: Am I operating on autopilot or thinking intentionally?

Evening Decision Reflection – Review the day’s choices: Did I think optimally? What can I improve?
